“LIGHT OF THE WORLD”

“LIGHT OF THE WORLD”

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor is a lamp lit and placed under a drawer, but on the lampstand, so that it illuminates all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before all, so that all may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven”.
(Matthew 5: 14-16)

A woman, with a natural ability to write and letters, thanking the LORD for the gift she had received through Him, dedicated a beautiful poem to which she titled “You, Light of the World.” It began with a beautiful phrase which said: “I want to walk with You as a child of Your light.”

Today’s world is covered in episodes of darkness. Wars, refugees, diseases, violence, corruption and a large list of confusion that surround the lives of many, in fear and despair. In this context, the only way out is to seek the light of GOD and become His instrument.

In today’s passage, we see how JESUS uses a beautiful metaphor to guide us on the path of becoming through the light of the LORD, into the light of the world. To do this, he tells us:

  1. That we are his light: “You are the light of the world.”
  2. We must not hide our brightness, but make it visible to everyone, so that it is observed and reflected in others: “Neither is a lamp lit and placed under a drawer, but on the candlestick, so that it illuminates all who are at home.”
  3. The light of the LORD in us will be the result of our good works, according to the obedience of His Word, reflected in our character, attitudes, actions and testimonies: “In the same way, let your light shine before all, so that all may see his good works and glorify his Father who is in heaven”.

Let us open our eyes to observe the light of the LORD every day and may it shine on us. Let’s make it strong, fulfilling His purpose, obeying His Word and being imitators of GOD as beloved children (Ephesians 5: 1) As the poem ends: “May Your light shine in my heart, LORD.”

Dear LORD, allow me to follow You, strengthen my character and fill me with the will to be light in Your word. Guide me to imitate you as your beloved son so that my good works bear fruit glorifying you. In the name of JESUS. Amen and Amen.
