“YOUR SPECIAL TREASURE”

“YOUR SPECIAL TREASURE”

“If you now listen to my voice and keep my covenant, you will be my special treasure above all peoples, because all the land belongs to me.”
(Exodus 19: 5)

Have you ever thought about the great privilege of being called “GOD’s special treasure”? The people of Israel receive this wonderful news from the LORD, paraphrasing the LORD’s message in today’s verse: You will be my special heritage among all peoples. But since all privileges come with a series of responsibilities, the LORD has determined that this would only be possible if his people lived by his commandments and his everlasting covenant. What we have here is, in fact, a pact or alliance between the liberating GOD and his people, who were freed from the slavery of Egypt. It was very common at that time for protectorate treaties.

When a king defeated a certain nation, the conquered people became his vassal and a species of his peculiar property. GOD is the supreme LORD of the entire universe. He is the master of heaven and earth: “For all the earth is mine.” (Ex. 19.5b).

But how wonderful that GOD wants to make us his special treasure. This truth is so valuable that it will be highlighted once more in the New Testament context in the first letter of Peter. There, the apostle reveals to us that GOD’s purpose in granting us this great privilege is to announce his wonderful virtues to the world: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people acquired by God, so that you may announce the virtues of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2: 9)

Dear LORD, forge in me in me, the character of a person who continually seeks You, so that I can be a testimony of Your greatness. I want to announce Your wonders, Your blessings and Your unconditional love in my life. In the name of JESUS. Amen and Amen.
